shown above are in our historic
Arts and Crafts style. This five
star hotel features a sophisticated
interior with great attention
to all details. Industrial grilles
would have detracted from the
elegant look the architect and
designer desired.
In the case of these two ceilings,
the grilles become the design.
As for the coffered ceiling on
the left, the large return grilles
serve two functions. First they
perform as return air registers,
secondly they become the ceiling
design. The standard type louvered
grilles could only function as
return grilles, since as ceiling
ornamentation they are a disaster.
As for the ceiling on the right,
the large 36"x72" return creates
an eye catching ceiling. A louvered
grille would make the hallway
dark and dreary.
Large return grilles are needed
everywhere in hotels. Unfortunately
the standard industrial louvered
return grille detracts from the
ambiance of the interior design.

was not invented when they were
built, historic hotels have been
retrofitted with AC. Most of these

louvered grilles from the post
classical era. They are like wounds
that never heal, adjacent to the
classical ornamentation which
adorns so many of our finest old
hotels. Beaux-Artes provides solutions
