Finishing Touches, Decorative Fixes for Everyday Eyesores

You've invested countless hours and boundless energy in your new home to ensure that every detail is just right. Except for the industrial-looking recessed lights above your farmhouse-style kitchen sink. and the metallic HVAC return in your Louis XIV sitting room. Not to mention the speaker grilles that look glaringly out of place in your faux finished media room walls. In the past, these utilitarian and often unattractive building items could be found in even the most exclusive residences. Now, Melanie and Stuart Kershner are out to make over these everyday eyesores with a unique line of custom-made decorative architectural products.

The artistic couple first realized the dire need for decorative embellishments when they were installing an intricate plaster ceiling and noticed how several sterile recessed lights were detracting from its overall appearance. "Stuart made a master mold of a decorative piece for the recessed lights, and we were so pleased with the result that we realized it could be a viable product," explains Melanie. With that discovery, the family-owned firm Beaux-Artes was born in 2000.

From that first recessed lighting medallion, the Churchton, Maryland-based business has expanded to offer HVAC, filter and speaker grilles, crawl space vents and other items in styles ranging from French Colonial to Rococo and Louis XIV to Arts and Crafts.

Each piece is individually cast in polyester resin when it is ordered and pre-finished by hand in one of 33 faux finishes at no additional charge (silver and gold leaf are available for a premium). One of the reasons the Kershners devote so much time to creating these works is so that their clients won't have to invest valuable hours and resources installing them. Recessed lighting medallions, for example, can be hung in as little as two minutes without any rewiring. Grille installation is as simple as removing and replacing a few screws.

Among the firm's newest products are ready-to-assemble architectural wall panels. "Previously, wall panels were created by professionals with molding that was only available in small sections and had to be mitred. Our panels are cast in resin and prefinished so that anyone can install them." Indeed, every set of panels comes with adhesive caulk specially tinted to the finish you select that simultaneously attaches the panel to the drywall and caulks the seam. For a more custom look, Melanie offers handpainted enhanced canvas centers that are installed just like wallpaper.

Other offerings are designed to transform doors. Hinge straps can be glued next to existing hinges and provide a dramatic facelift, while faceplates fit over existing doorknobs - eliminating the need to remove the existing knobs just to change a door's appearance.

"We're looking to do the same thing with window surrounds and door trim next. We look for things that are not alredy in the marketplace, things that appeal to those who want to do-it-yourself," she says. The result is a custom creation that looks as if it's been created specifically for your home by skilled craftsmen - because it has. "Architectural details add value to a home, not only do you recoup your investment financially, but they create a beautiful backdrop for your life," Melanie says.
